Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) is a highly contagious emerging viral pathogen that all dogs are susceptible too.The vaccine is never 100% guarantee. Even with precautions, dogs can still acquire symptoms of canine infectious respiratory diseases (CIRD) due to them being extremely contagious. Nose to nose contact, contact with contaminated objects or being within 20 feet of an infected dog is all it takes to spread the infection. Many factors influence a dogs ability to fight off infections, including stress due to change in environment, enclosed quarters with high population of other dogs, general health, prior vaccination history, exposure levels, extreme changes in humidity and temperature. Nasal swabs seem to be the best sample for confirming a diagnosis.
